The Problem

The Goal

Language learning can be lonely which leads to a loss in motivation. It is easy to lose sight of goals and the process can be stressful and difficult.

I set out to solve this problem by creating an app that connects language learners and delivers short lessons and media recommendations.

How might we

How might we make learning a language a more collaborative and social process while encouraging those learning to stay motivated?

Secondary Research

Through my secondary research I found that many learners lack exposure to cultural aspects of the language as well as adequate speaking practice. This and a loss of motivation causes many to give up on their language learning journey.

Other key information:

  • People struggle to learn past the age of 17 to 18 due to reduced brain plasticity and neurological preferences
  • Children learn faster from a fully immersed environment (i.e. parents and friends speaking the respective language)
  • Many focus on memorization instead of practice

Primary Research

Over a 5 day period I interviewed 6 language learners and identified major pain points.

  • “It’s hard to keep learning when you don’t have productive conversations when practicing speaking.”
  • “I tend to give up when I feel like I’m not progressing enough.”
  • “The language resources I use don’t align with my lifestyle.”

Takeaways

As my first UX/UI design project I felt overwhelmed and stressed when starting out as I began to realize how much detail and research goes behind the design of an app. However, as someone with a passion for language learning this project soon became something that I looked forward to working on and as time went by I found myself becoming more and more confident in my design skills.

Looking forward...

Due to time, I wasn’t able to conduct user testing on this case study and receive feedback on my work. In future projects, I hope to implement a user testing stage and a reiteration of my work to further improve upon my designs.
